This article examines the structural and modulation characteristics of “Segah” mugham, one of the important examples of Azerbaijani mugham art. The main aim of the study is to determine the shoba (section) and gusha structure of the different types of “Segah” mugham. At the same time, the study aims to identify the modal-intonational relationships between these sections and gushas and other mughams.
The relevance of the topic is determined by the need for a systematic study of the internal structure and modulation possibilities of “Segah” mugham. The functional relationships between sections and gushas within mugham dastgahs are of significant theoretical importance. The examination of these relationships provides a clearer understanding of the richness of the Azerbaijani modal system. The significance of the study lies in identifying the relationships between “Segah” mugham and other mugham families. The findings are also important for the study of mugham theory and performance practice.
The study employs comparative, structural-functional, and theoretical-analytical methods. Information presented in various scholarly sources is comparatively analyzed. The section and gusha structures of “Zabul Segah”, “Mirza Huseyn Segah”, and “Kharij Segah” are examined. The comparative tables and musical examples presented in
the article reveal the deep layers of mugam from both performance and theoretical perspectives.
The analysis demonstrates that different types of “Segah” mugham differ in terms of the number and sequence of their sections and gushas. The “Mayeyi-Zabul,” “Zil Zabul,” “Manandi-hasar,” and “Manandi-mukhalif” sections of “Zabul Segah” establish modulation relationships with the “Mahur-hindi,” “Shur,” “Chahargah,” and “Shushtar” mughams, respectively. In “Kharij Segah,” the “Manandi-hasar,” “Manandi-mukhalif,” and “Shikasteyi-fars” sections are distinguished by their potential for transition to other mugham families. Consequently, “Segah” mugham is characterized by a rich and dynamic modal structure. Its sections and gushas provide important functional possibilities for transitions between different mugham systems. The findings of the study contribute to a deeper understanding of the structural characteristics and modulation relationships of “Segah” mugham
