Abstract

The factors that affect the commitment of students to school were examined in this research. A descriptive research technique of qualitative techniques was used. When the results were examined; it was seen that girls were more committed to school compared to boys. Looking at the results of this research; we can say that all factors that affect the commitment to school are related and affect each other. The more these factors coordinate the more the commitment rate is. The attitude and feelings of children whose parents help school will also improve in a positive way. They will also realize how important social activities are.

Many definitions of commitment to school have been made. Let’s have a look at some of them. Commitment to school can be described as children loving the school environment, making good friendships, feeling like a part of the school, and acting according to school rules. Commitment to school means being together with everyone else at the school and accepting them. Commitment to school can be described as thinking positively about school, keeping good relationships with peers, or fulfilling the responsibilities we have.

Children attending school activities, making more time for classes, or working harder to get better marks is proof of this. Children with a higher commitment are less likely to drop out and this prevents unwanted situations at school. In case there is no commitment to school, unhappiness is inevitable. Attending activities about school or giving importance to school can be described as a commitment to the school. When psychological needs like autonomy, being interested and sufficiency are met, we can see that commitment is realized in three different ways. These commitments are behavioral, sensory, and cognitive. It means their feelings towards school are sensory commitment; their attendance in school activities is behavioral commitment and their importance towards school is cognitive commitment.

In this research where we examined the factors that affect the commitment of children to school, we informed you about the types of commitments describing the commitment to school. The factors that affect the commitment of children to school are in two groups, student and school.

The school factors are the teacher, the structure of the classroom, subjects, the commitment of the school administration, social activities, teaching methods, and the school environment. Student factors are feeling of belonging, autonomy, sufficiency needs, and the parents’ effect on school commitment. We tried to explain the factors that affect the commitment to the school in detail. As a result of our research and explanation, some discussions and results are explained in the final part.
