Abstract

This study analyses the development of Japanese graphic design within the framework of aesthetic and minimalism principles, its cultural influences and its place in the global design understanding. At the same time, it analyses the historical process of this discipline and the unique approaches it has added to the world of design. Japanese graphic design has developed based on traditional Japanese art and Zen philosophy and reflects a minimalist aesthetic approach centred on simplicity, negative space usage and functionality. Synthesising its own cultural heritage with modern design movements such as Bauhaus and Constructivism, Japan has built a unique visual language that is influential in the formation of global design trends. The research uses a qualitative methodology, including historical analysis, literature review and case studies of the work of prominent Japanese graphic designers such as Ikko Tanaka, Tadanori Yokoo and Shigeo Fukuda. The findings reveal that Japanese graphic design is not only a powerful visual communication tool, but also embodies deep philosophical and cultural narratives. Its minimalist colour scheme, conscious use of negative space and innovations in typography have had a significant impact on contemporary branding, digital media and user experience design. In conclusion, this study highlights how Japanese graphic design has successfully synthesised tradition and modernity and demonstrates the influence of this discipline on Eastern and Western design practices. It is suggested that future research should examine the relationship of Japanese graphic design with the digital transformation process, AI-assisted design methodologies and sustainable design practices. By providing a comprehensive understanding of the aesthetic and functional principles of Japanese graphic design, this study contributes to global design trends and intercultural interaction.
