Abstract

Literary works serve as important tools in character development. Stories are one of the genres within these works. As a subgenre of literature, short stories convey the author’s thoughts, ideas, values, and worldview to the reader through language. These types of narratives also aim to foster ethical and aesthetic awareness in readers. This study aims to identify the values presented in Bernardin De Saint Pierre’s short story The Indian Cottage. The study employs document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods. Research data were obtained from the texts and dialogues in the book and interpreted using descriptive analysis. As a result of the study, it was found that the values in The Indian Cottage are expressed through words, phrases, and sentences. The characters in the story convey meaningful messages to the reader. Among the values highlighted in the story, “humility” and “love of nature” and “religious” are the most prominent.
