Narsisizm, temelde kırılgan olan büyüklenmeci bir benlik duygusunu sürdürmeye yönelik uyumsuz öz düzenleme stratejileri ile karakterize edilen bir kavramdır. Narsisizmin, kırılgan ve büyüklenmeci olmak üzere iki boyutta ele alınmaktadır. Her iki boyut da empati eksikliği, kibir ve düşmanca tutumlar gibi ortak özellikleri paylaşmaktadır. Diğer taraftan büyüklenmeci narsisizm yüksek öz saygı, yetki sahibi olma ve güçlü bir beğenilme ihtiyacını içerirken, kırılgan narsisizm düşük öz saygı ve duygusal istikrarsızlık içermektedir. Narsisistik davranışların ortaya çıkmasında ve sürdürülmesinde duygu düzenleme güçlükleri ve savunma mekanizmaları önemli rol oynamaktadır. Duygu düzenleme, bireylerin duygusal tepkilerini anlamasını ve bu tepkilerin bilinçli veya bilinçsiz olarak düzenleme kapasitesini ifade etmektedir. Savunma mekanizmaları ise bireyleri olumsuz duygulardan korumak amacıyla rahatsız edici içsel veya dışsal durumla ilgili algıyı değiştiren zihinsel süreçlerdir. Duygu düzenleme mekanizmalarından farklı olarak savunma mekanizmaları yalnızca olumsuz duyguları hedefleyen bilinçsiz çabaları içermektedir. Narsisizme sahip bireylerin ego tehditleri karşısında yaşadıkları yoğun duygusal deneyimi nasıl düzenledikleri büyüklenmeci ve kırılgan narsisizm boyutu arasında farklılık göstermektedir. Bu nedenle narsisistik eğilimlere sahip bireylerin duygularını nasıl düzenlediklerini ve hangi savunma mekanizmalarını kullandıklarını anlamak, narsisizmin farklı boyutlarını anlamak açısından önem taşımaktadır. Mevcut derleme çalışması, ortak bir büyüklenmeci benlik çekirdeğini paylaşan, ancak klinik ve kişilerarası görünümü farklılaşan iki narsisizm boyutunu, içerdikleri duygu düzenleme güçlükleri ve savunma mekanizmaları açısından incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır.
