Abstract

In nomadic life, weaving and other cultural products are produced primarily for use. The purpose of use determines the technique and material of the weaving.  Weavings used in daily life may have one or several uses. The production process of weavings should be evaluated in terms of aesthetic, technical, commercial and aesthetic aspects. Mafraş weavings are woven and used in the east of Anatolia. These weavings are also woven and used by Iranian Shahsavan (Shahseven), Kashgay, Afshar and Azerbaijani nomads of Turkish origin. Mafraş is one of the weavings made for transportation and storage. Igdir is one of the places in eastern Anatolia where agriculture and animal husbandry are practiced. Yoruk and Turkmen groups here use these weavings. Mafrasha is also called Mefreş in Iğdır and eastern Anatolia.

Within the scope of the study, 50 samples were identified in the field research conducted between 2017-2022 in the center and districts of Iğdır and 12 of the oldest mafraş weavings with different pattern features were included in the research. Technical drawings of the samples identified as a result of field research and literature review method were made and documented and evaluated in terms of design and technical aspects.
